The Departed Movie Synopsis, War of Police and Mafia Informants

The story begins when, Sullivan has been raised as a spy within the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) and joins the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which is investigating the case against Costello.

A new officer, Billy Costigan Jr. was recruited by Captain Queenan and Staff Sergeant Dignam to go undercover and infiltrate Costello's gang. Costigan was chosen for his ties to organized crime, with his deceased uncle Jackie once connected to Costello's gang. Captain George Ellerby of the SIU informed Special Investigations that the identity of the undercover would only be known to Queenan and Dignam to prevent information from leaking out.

Costigan committed a series of crimes to attract the attention of Costello and executor Arnold French, who then recruited Costigan into the organization due to their attachment to his uncle. Over the next year, Costigan became increasingly involved in the operation.

Due to the pressure of maintaining her identity, her emotional and mental state declined, and she threatened to quit, but Queenan and Dignam convinced her to continue. Costigan's only contact at MSP was a police-appointed psychiatrist, Madolyn Madden, who was also Sullivan's girlfriend. Costigan and Madden later had a relationship.

Costigan told MSP Costello's gang was selling stolen computer microprocessors to the Hong Kong Triads. MSP devises a trap, but Sullivan informs Costello, allowing everyone to escape. MSP and Costello realize there is a spy among them and task Sullivan with finding him.

Meanwhile, Costigan learns that Costello is a protected FBI informant. Costigan shares his discovery with Queenan and Dignam while warning that Costello realizes there is a spy among his subordinates.

One night, Costigan follows Costello into an adult theater and witnesses him give an envelope containing information about his crew to Sullivan to compare with police records. Queenan orders Costigan to get a visual identification of Sullivan but she is unable to see his face clearly. When Sullivan realized that he was being followed, he mistakenly stabbed a restaurant worker and fled.

Later, Sullivan tried to juxtapose Costigan's image, captured by nearby security footage, with the police database but was unable to identify him. Queenan advises Sullivan to follow Costello to find the MSP spy. Fearing that he would soon be found and killed, Costigan called Queenan and arranged a meeting to stop the operation, but Sullivan followed Queenan, lying to other officers that Queenan might be a spy. Sullivan also summoned Costello's gang to the meeting location.

When Costello's men arrived, Queenan helped Costigan escape before being thrown from the roof of the building to his death. This led to a shootout between SIU agents and Costello's men. Dignam who was angered by Queenan's murder attacked Sullivan and was stopped by Ellerby. Timothy Delahunt, one of Costello's henchmen injured in the shootout with the police, tells Costigan that he knows he is a rat, but before he succumbs to his wounds, Delahunt implies that he also works for law enforcement.

News reports reveal that Delahunt is an undercover officer for the Boston Police Department, but Costello suspects that the police department is making false claims to get him to stop looking for spies. Sullivan looks through Queenan's belongings and learns that Co.
